The loss of a close relative or friend can be devastating and brings about very strong emotions. For some people, grieving starts at the time of diagnosis, at the time of death and for others, it can happens sometimes years later. Grief is a natural response to losing someone important to you. In the first minutes and hours, you may have many different feelings and emotions, and this is normal. There's no right or wrong way to feel or behave at a time like this. You may go into shock or feel numb. You may feel disbelief and think that what's happened is not real. You may feel relief at first if the person has been in pain or if caring for them has become difficult. Later on, people can experience a variety of emotions, like anger, denial, anxiety, guilt, despair, depression, acceptance and a range of physical symptoms.
